Essentialism is a philosophy which was advocated by early Greek philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle. In broad terms, we can define essence as “A certain set of core properties that are necessary or essential for a thing to be what it is.”. These philosophers used to believe that our essence has been determined before our existence, so we can say that essentialism is a view that says “ For any specific entity there is a set of attributes which are necessary to its identity and function.”. Plato’s idealism is one his the earliest known conjecture on how all known things have an essential reality behind them which makes these things and concepts what they are. In the same vein, Aristotle’s categories propose that all the objects are objects they are by the virtue of their substance and also that the substance makes the object what it is.
